The Old Courthouse Museum's library oversees the Genealogy Room, Genealogy Library, Museum Library, Artifacts, and Displays. We conduct research and utilize a variety of printed and electronic resources. Sources available for genealogical research include property records (circa 1850-1870), newspaper back issues, genealogy data bases, census information, cemetery records, year books, family history files, Tishomingo County records, death certificates, Confederate pension records filed in Tishomingo County, a list of all known Mississippians who served during the Civil War, and a record of all Mississippians and their widows who applied for pensions based on their service with the Confederate States during the Civil War. A data base is also available that lists known military personnel who served during the Civil War on either side. Please direct queries to the director at [email protected] or call 662-423-3500. The Battle of Iuka was fought here during September of 1862. It and the Battle of Corinth are a pair of battles fought during a span of approximately two weeks. Those days are know as The Darkest Days Of The War.
Old Douglas the camel was present during the Battle of Iuka. He carried the instruments for the 43rd Mississippi's bandsmen. During the Siege of Vicksburg, he was killed by a Federal sharpshooter. A marker was erected for him at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg.
